Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
