From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a exciting storyline showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces growing in strength within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.
The Soldiers Table Introduced
The latest chapter ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of characters who will separate from the central cast to embark on their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.
This warrior group features Teor (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
Hence, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.
What Defines the Combat Party
Per the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.
Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might appear unsuited, but the developments of the third episode show why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
First, the group knows exactly where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.
Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise started the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his own means, entering the secret base, assaulting the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.
The traitor then paid off his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, wants retribution.
- The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and warns that it is a nasty environment.
- The warrior and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
- However, their status as important members in the powerful family could help the party reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, Teor swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:
- The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and The cleric defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- The target is wanted dead by the clan.
This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.
